New rules for overseas licence holders
Changes to the Recognised Country Scheme are coming which will impact overseas licence holders from certain countries. From 1 May 2025, some drivers will need to pass local tests to obtain a NSW driver licence.
What’s Changing?
As announced by Austroads on 21 October 2024, changes are being introduced to the Recognised Country Scheme for Experienced Driver Recognition status.
Under the new arrangements, Experienced Driver Recognition status will cease on 30 April 2025 for individuals from countries on List B in most Australian states and territories, including NSW.
From 1 May 2025, drivers from countries in List B will need to pass the Driver Knowledge Test and The Driving Test to obtain a NSW driver licence.
If drivers are found to be driving without a NSW driver licence from 1 May 2025, they may be fined for driving without a valid licence.
