Overseas Drivers Licence Holders

New rules for overseas licence holders

Overseas licence policy change update 2024

From 1 March 2024, all drivers in NSW on a temporary visa, using an overseas licence and staying in Australia for more than six months must convert to a NSW drivers licence.

This change aligns with rules for temporary visa holders who take up residence in NSW on or after 1 July 2023 to convert their overseas licence to a NSW licence if they have resided in the state for six months and wish to continue to drive before 1 March 2025.

Temporary visa holders have plenty of time – 12 months from March 2024 - to apply for a NSW licence at Service NSW Centre.

More information on the regulation change will be available via nsw.gov.au/overseasdriver from 1 March 2024.
